Surprise from Summerland School

One of the girls in our class's house had been broken into recently. You can imagine the stress that, that would have caused while trying to deal with the Earthquakes too.
John presented a parcel today to her that had been sent by Summerland School.

As you can see she is very happy to have her Nintendo Duel Screen replaced. Its great to know that while there are people out there who do horrible things, there are many more that do wonderfully caring things. Thanks Summerland School for reminding us of that.

Actions Speak Louder Than Words.

Today we had some people come to school .They taught us how to speak with a drum. I loved the show. When we were druming our hands got so sore. The drums were African drums. We would like to have another show like that. Thank you for letting us use the African drums.

Earthquake at Freeville School

Fortunately Freeville School has done well in the Earthquake. There were no breakages that I know of and it was given the all clear structurally. It's good to know we have such a strong and sturdy school!

From what I can see it is likely that we will not be back at school until Monday according to the Ministry of Education's website, because of the sanitation issuses. It's a legal requirement that there be drinkable water and safe clean toileting.

It was great to see some children form our class add their own recounts of what happened for them during the earthquake. I think the people of Canterbury have coped very well with this earthquake, e.g. everyone doing the right thing so that everyone survived, power and water being restored quickly, neighbours supporting neighbours and helping out people where they can.

Friday's Dress Up Day for the Book Fair.

We had a great day last Friday dressing up as our favourite book character for the book fair. There are a few entries about the day on the library blog. You should have a look for Clifford and the winners of the competitions there. In the mean time enjoy some of our costumes. There were more photos taken than could fit in our blog, but you could have your child show you the rest at school.

Dress Up Day Tomorrow!

As part of the book fair tomorrow we have been invited to dress up as a character from a favourite book we like. To help you get some ideas I have posted some photos of a dress up day we had two years ago. I wonder if you can guess what I will come dressed up as.

Room 8's Learning Celebration

Today we invited our parents to come and see all our wonderfull work we have been doing since the middle of last term. We have been learning about the needs of people and how different groups of people meet their needs.

We looked at Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and then worked in a group to design a civilization of our own, with buildings that help fulfil people's needs.

Thanks to all the parents who were able to make it down to school and give us valuable feedback about our learning.

In addition to our regular blog I am going to start this one which will highlight the learning or interesting events that happen in Room 8. This blog will be open to the world and will showcase the creativity, motivation, adaptableness, caring nature, global awareness, communicative skills and critical thoughts of our class.
